Supporting Trainees Entering Practice (STEP)

The Supporting Trainees Entering Practice (STEP) process is a means of supporting medical students during the transition from Medical School to Foundation School and during the F1 year.

When processing STEP forms, the Scottish Foundation School adheres to GDPR standards and the UKFPO/MSC STEP process can be found on the UKFPO website.

Please note that the STEP process is now electronic for applicants nominated by a UK Medical School. Applicants who have applied through the eligibility process should complete a paper form and send this back as a scanned copy to sfas@nes.scot.nhs.uk.

All STEP forms received by the Scottish Foundation School are reviewed by the Foundation School Director (FSD). The FSD will determine which forms require to be shared with your Foundation Programme Director (FPD) in order to help them identify any adjustments or additional support you may require. Forms which require to be shared will be shared securely with your FPD and copied to the relevant Associate Postgraduate Dean and Consortium Lead (if applicable) for your region. Forms will not be shared with other parties, including Health Board HR departments, without your consent. If required, your FPD will arrange an early meeting with you to discuss adjustments or additional support you may require.

STEP forms will then be stored by the Scottish Foundation School in accordance with GDPR until the end of your Foundation Programme when they will be destroyed.

For all queries relating to STEP, please contact sfas@nes.scot.nhs.uk.

If you need to contact the Foundation School regarding a Fitness to Practice investigation, please contact sfas@nes.scot.nhs.uk
