Trainee information
The Resident Doctor in Training is required to consider the pros and cons of training LTFT and where necessary seek advice e.g. fellow Resident Doctors in Training, Programme Director, Trainee Development and Wellbeing Service (TDWS). The only requirement for application is having a well-founded reason. Form A must be completed no less than 3 months in advance of the proposed start date to allow the necessary processes, any required discussion, required changes to training or service delivery, and HR and payroll to be informed in time to implement the necessary adjustments. The Resident Doctors in Training must participate in the annual review process by completion of the form C questionnaire.
The Programme Director must be available to discuss and consider an application for LTFT training. They must be in an informed position to advise on the pros and cons of LTFT training. They must assess whether training progress can be achieved if training progresses on a LTFT basis and agree an appropriate percentage. They should consider any impact on the training programme and in particular significant impact on other Resident Doctors in Training. If the application for training LTFT is supported, they must liaise with training programme management (TPM) to ensure Placement Board approval is requested. If the application for training LTFT is not supported, then the Programme Director must give their reasons in writing to the Resident Doctor in Training.
The TDWS can be used for advice by either Resident Doctors in Training or Programme Director at times of uncertainty.
The Placement Board on receipt of Form B from TPM must consider the application for training LTFT and any potential impact on service delivery. They must agree the days at work with the Resident Doctor in Training and their out of hours commitment, if relevant. Normally, the in and out of hours percentage worked should be the same. If the application for training LTFT is approved, they must liaise with Training Programme Management (TPM) to ensure the relevant Human Resources departments are informed. If the application for training LTFT is declined, then the service must give their reasons in writing to the Resident Doctor in Training.
