Vertigo Made Simpler

Course/Event Description

This popular, practical course is designed for physicians, trainees and associated health care professionals seeing the dizzy patient in acute admissions unit, emergency department, syncope units, falls services, TIA clinics and outpatients.  

Using a varied programme of lectures, practical demonstrations and interactive small group workshops, delegates will gain skills in assessment and management of the most common causes of dizziness and vertigo (including BPPV and repositioning manoeuvres).

Participants will understand the physiology and clinical signs, for example head Impulse test, nystagmus in patients presenting with acute vestibular syndrome and triggered vertigo. Which are common emergency presentations to medicine and stroke services.

Learning outcomes

Having completed this course, participants should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the following areas: 

  • The anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system  
  • Bedside assessment and history taking of the dizzy patient 
  • The hallpike test and repositioning manoeuvres 
  • Central versus peripheral signs, including: HINTS, dynamic visual acuity and VOR testing in  the acute setting 
  • Balance assessment, outcome measures and interpretation 
  • Vestibular and balance rehabilitation 

Course director 
Dean Metz is a vestibular specialist physiotherapist with 30 years of experience, specialising in the care of older adults, individuals at risk of falling, and those with dizziness. A former Chair of The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Vestibular Rehabilitation (ACPIVR), he regularly delivers expert training across the UK and Ireland.
