GASOC (Global Anaesthesia, Surgery and Obstetric Collaboration) is an international, UK and Ireland-based trainee doctor organisation aimed at promoting respectful and ethical engagement in global surgery efforts for trainee and specialist doctors. We are a multi-disciplinary organisation with resident anaesthetists, obstetricians and gynaecologists and surgeons (all specialties) represented in our committee and international membership.
We are delighted to hold our 10th anniversary conference in Glasgow, at the Technology & Innovation Centre, Strathclyde University, 99 George Street, Glasgow G1 1RD, on the 24-25 October 2025. This is a hybrid conference with online tickets also available.
The theme of the conference is "Engage, Empower, Elevate: 10 years of Global Surgery". The conference will explore how global surgery has evolved over the last 10 years and what efforts are required to achieve greater equity in surgical care access worldwide. The conference will focus on how trainee and resident doctors can be empowered to make a meaningful impact in global health, and will offer networking opportunities.
The conference has several exciting workshops, including:
1. Preparing to volunteer as a Medic,
- practical advice for doctors wishing to volunteer internationally.
2. Humanitarian Surgical Response to Conflicts & Catastrophes,
- run by the Trainees of David Nott Foundation.
3. Ethics & Health Equity in Global Surgery Research,
- how to conduct ethical and impactful research in global health.
4. Designing frugal solutions for global health challenges,
- featuring laparoscopic simulation and exploring the frugal design process.
5. Sustainable practice in healthcare,
- delivered by NHS Chief Sustainability Officer clinical fellow alumnus.
6. Surgical and Anaesthetic Strategies for Placenta Accreta Spectrum and Major Bleeds,
- delivered by the GynaeFellow team.
We are delighted to welcome experts in global health as our speakers, such as:
- Miss Mhairi Collie OBE, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, talking on obstetric fistula care in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Professor Emmanuel Makasa- Global Health Diplomat, Zambia, talking about the inception and development of the global surgery movement.
- Dr Safa Ali, BBC 100 Women 2024, speaking about maternal healthcare in Sudan under conflict.
- Professor Bruce Biccard, Oxford University, addressing research in global surgery.
- NHS Scotland Global Health Unit, on how they support international volunteering for NHS staff.
