Continued success for Scottish Medical recruitment

99% Fill in all Round 1 Specialties

Latest recruitment figures show high fill rates across all core and specialty medical training posts in Scotland with a record number of appointments made at CT1/ST1.

The data, published by NHS Education for Scotland (NES), shows 679 of the 686 (99%) places on offer in Round 1 have been filled.

Twelve out of fourteen training programmes achieved 100% recruitment with General Practice achieving a 98.1% fill rate.

Health Secretary, Humza Yousaf said:

“As Scotland looks to recover from the impact of Covid-19, it is both welcome and encouraging news that 2021 has so far been the most successful year of any of the last five years for the recruitment of trainee doctors.

“It has been an unprecedented success: For the first time ever, 100% of Core Psychiatry training posts and 99% of General Practice training posts have been filled. With one recruitment round remaining this year, we expect that the few remaining training posts will have equally high fill rates and we will continue to focus our attention on the services that will be most needed by Scotland’s population over the coming years.

“Particular attention is of course being paid to the medical specialties that form the frontline of Covid care and the positive recruitment results in these areas provide a great deal of hope and assurance for the future of our health service.

“It is clear that Scotland continues to be a popular choice for medical training and I look forward to welcoming trainees from Scotland, and further afield, into our NHS. We will continue to support trainee doctors at all levels who are working within NHS Scotland and I would like to pay tribute to all staff who have contributed to Scotland’s response to Covid-19.”

NES Medical Director, Professor Stewart Irvine, said:

“We’re delighted that our training programmes continue to attract high quality doctors to Scotland. The fill rates have outperformed our expectations in what has been a period of immense change for the NHS and providers of medical education and training. We and our partners look forward to welcoming our new trainees and supporting their ongoing education and training needs.”
