FAQs - for practice interested in becoming a Foundation Training Practice

  • F2s are fully licenced doctors, usually in their second year post-graduation.
  • They rotate round jobs every 4 months, at the start of August, December and April.  We would normally expect practices to commit to taking an F2 in each block (i.e. 3 per year)
  • They are able to work independently, with support and supervision.
  • They can see patients, sign prescriptions and fit notes, make referrals and arrange admissions.
  • They are not in specialty training yet and as such do not need to be trained to become GPs.
  • There is flexibility around what work you assign to F2s. Relevant work may include GP clinics, minor illness, chronic disease monitoring, medication reviews and quality improvement activities.

  • You must provide supervision appropriate to the work they are undertaking.
  • The level of supervision will decrease as the F2 becomes more familiar with the work.
  • F2s should have one educational session per week. There are many forms this can take including a one-to-one tutorial, attending deanery teaching and shadowing health professionals. You are not expected to provide weekly tutorials.
  • Practices do report that F2s make a net positive contribution to the practice workload.
  • Practices hosting F2s will receive the annual training grant (approx. £10,500 for 3 F2s across the year)

  • Please confirm your interest to colin.mcarthur@nhs.scot for North or South East regions, or christine.heron@nhs.scot for West or East regions
  • New Educational Supervisors need to achieve Recognition of Training status, the main component of which is attendance at the one session trainers workshop (free, provided by NES) - this is not needed if the prospective ES is already an accredited GP Trainer.
  • We offer an optional workshop for new Educational Supervisors and Practice Managers to go over the practicalities of hosting F2s in practice.
