Would you like to return to work as a General Practitioner? Have you trained overseas and wish to gain experience of working in NHS General Practice before joining the GP community in Scotland?
You may be eligible for either of two programmes – the Scotland GP Returner programme or the Scotland GP Enhanced Induction Programme.
Our I&R programmes provide a straightforward route for you to either return safely to General Practice in a supported way or, if you have no previous experience, to be fully inducted into NHS General Practice.
The programme will be tailored around you following an individual learning needs assessment. You will be allocated a practice-based supervisor who will provide feedback to support your integration as an independent general medical practitioner in the NHS in Scotland.
These programmes are funded by Scottish Government, providing applicants with a salary to support them whilst on the programme.
Both programmes offer a period of up to 6 months (whole time equivalent) with supervised clinical sessions in General Practice, as well as workplace based assessment & educational guidance.
During the practice attachment the doctor will be included on the Performers’ List as “in training for a fixed period”.
Satisfactory completion means that the named educational supervisor, informed by workplace assessments, is in a position to recommend to the Health Board Medical Director that the Returner or Enhanced Inductee has reached the standard required for independent practice.
The Scotland GP Returner Programme provides an opportunity for General Practitioners (GPs) who are on (or eligible to be on) the General Medical Council’s (GMC) GP Register and eligible to go on the Scottish Performers’ List and who have previously worked in NHS General Practice to safely return to General Practice following a career break of at least two years.
The Scotland GP Enhanced Induction Programme supports the safe introduction of GPs who have qualified outside the UK and have no previous NHS GP experience. These doctors require a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR) as well as a licence to practise from the GMC before they can legally enter UK general practice. Entry to the programme requires passing the UK MCQ and Simulated Surgery Assessments.
